| About An Artist
& Designer named Lois Bender and Tea, Books, and Gardens Long before Lois
Bender was an Designer and a Tea/Garden Person, she was an Artist from the age
of 6, appreciating John Nagy, painting flowers in oils and growing up in
Woodmere, N.Y. She acquired the love of books and words from her "wordsmith"
& "garden lover" mother Flora Bloom. |

After attending Carnegie-Mellon University and
graduating from Hunter College, NY (B.A.), Bender received her M.F.A. in
painting from Boston University. Then she began an Art Director career in
advertising and graphic design in N.Y., winning awards and working with
clients, such as Godiva Chocolates, Corning Ware and Felissimo, etc. It wasn't
until 1994, when Bender took a course at the Center for Book Arts in N.Y., that
she rediscovered her love of books, bookmaking, handmade papers and letterpress
printing. With tea as her focus, she wrote, designed, and illustrated "Tea
Quotes" a handmade book, seeing the art of the book and the art of tea as
metaphors. Both express life's infinite variety of tastes, textures and
emotions, offering companionship and "healing" in satisfying both our social
and solitary needs for inner and physical well being.
Lois loves
gardens as well, inheriting the "garden spirit" from Flora, continuing to create
designs for her new GardenSpirits Stationery and Personal Bath and Body
Fragrance Collections. Having designed retail products for The New York
Botanical Garden and other clients, she currently turns to gardens as
inspiration to create in her favorite mediums of watercolor painting and
printmaking. Besides designing "GardenSpirits" Stationery and Fragrance
products, and after the impact of 9/11, Bender followed the healing spirit of
her favorite theme of Gardens, and has followed to her career path leading to
teaching art in Garden Sites, and Spa and Well-Being Environments including New
York City Garden Locations and Gurney's Spa Resort, Montauk, LI. She believes
in the pleasure, beauty and personal enrichment found in painting and visual
art experiences in beautiful settings and helps people to discover and explore
these paths to well-being for themselves.
