Rick Murphy is one of the most honored journalists on the East End of Long Island, garnering 18 awards during his 14-year career, including Best In Depth reporting in the country and Best News Article in the country.

Murphy worked for 10 years as Senior Writer with the prestigious East Hampton Star, and later served as a feature writer for the New York Times. His work has appeared in over two dozen publications.
After leaving the journalism field in 1998 to accept a position as Senior Vice President with Renaissance inc., a national Executive Search firm affiliated with Paine Webber, Murphy enjoyed outstanding success and became one of the nation's top brokers in the field.

In March 2003 the advertising legend Jerry Della Femina, who has once been a subject of a Murphy article in The New York Times, called with an enticing offer - to become editor of the Riverhead Independent and the Westhampton Independent, two fledging newspapers Della Femina owned. Less than a month later Murphy was named editor of Della Femina's Southampton Independent and his flagship paper, the East Hampton Independent.

Murphy's weekly column, Low Tidings, now in its 16th year, has developed a loyal cult following and was named Best Humor Column in New York State.
