Small Town Girl Is a Real Dream
 December 15, 2003

Ingrid Lemme is known for her gimmicks publicizing Gurney's Inn in Montauk, but none would seem to approach what her latest effort could achieve: putting Maharishi Vedic City, Iowa, on the map.

Lemme is the driving force behind American Dream Town, USA, an enterprise that is running a contest to whittle 150 U.S. communities (three from each state) down to 50 American Dream Towns, which will be featured in a book Lemme is putting together. (She says she's choosing between offers from two major publishers.) Soon to come: merchandise and a string of American Dream Shops, four of which are to open in the Hamptons next spring and will sell, Lemme said, "all kinds of nifty stuff" with a patriotic theme.

Greenport Voted 2004 American Dream Town
December, 2003

At the stroke of midnight, December 31, 2003, it was decided: Greenport is the 2004 American Dream Town for New York, beating out Cooperstown and Tarrytown by a landslide. It’s the second such distinction for a local community -- Montauk was named the inaugural Dream Town last year.
“It’s a small town mayor’s dream come true. We’re the little village that did,” said Mayor David Kapell. He said it shows the community sees itself in a positive light, which compared to the blight and sense of defeat that dominated the village just 10 years ago, points to a bright future for the village.
Greenport racked up 871 votes compared to only 12 votes for the Westchester town of Tarrytown and 32 votes for the Catskill-Mohawk Valley town of Cooperstown. There are three nominations per state, with the highest vote getter in each state earning the designation of American Dream Town organizers said, though it appears Montauk was merely designated last year’s winner with no balloting taking place.

Town Gets Chance At `Dream' Status
December 6, 2003
By CLAUDIA VAN NES, Courant Staff Writer

OLD SAYBROOK -- Old Saybrook is in the running to be voted an American Dream Town.
A website promoting the contest, organized by the host of a Long Island television show, puts the town ahead of Greenwich and Mystic in the balloting for the honor of being the dream town of Connecticut.
If Old Saybrook stays ahead, it would mean publicity, television coverage and possibly more - but no one can say how much.
Danielle Watts-St. Germain, the school-to-career teacher/coordinator for the school district, recently received an e-mail from a friend who works for the Mystic Chamber of Commerce asking her to vote for that town in the contest.

MONTAUK SUN: "American Dream Town© 2003
Montauk, L.I. New York"
Congratulations!!! Seven Stars and Stripes for Montauk
September, 2003

Montauk, American Dream Town, New York. So how does that sound to you? I like it. I like everything that has to do with 'The Beautiful' and the 'American Dream'. Did you know that there are many little towns out there with pretty middle names? Edenton, NC is claiming that they are "America's Prettiest Little Town". Just a little further south the elected officials of the Town of Cheraw, SC are convinced that they are living in the "Prettiest Town in Dixie", 'cause someone said so. Folk musician Bob Gibson had never visited the fair little city when he penned the song 'Abilene' in 1956, but he was right on target in the town's opinion; "Abilene, Abilene, prettiest town I've ever seen, folks down there don't treat you mean, in Abilene, my Abilene." The Ladies Home Journal described Woodstock, Vermont as the "The Prettiest Small Town in America". So what about "America's Most Beautiful Village"? Well we all know that is East Hampton, N.Y.; voted by National Geographic Magazine. The "Quietest Town in America" is supposedly Columbia, NC. Ahoskie, NC, which is probably the 2nd quietest town in America, had to use another term "Where all things go at a slower pace"! Littleton, NH was just recently named "9th Best Small Town in America"; if you ask anyone in Littleton who gave the town the lovely by-name; no one was really sure.
